Salicylic acid is used to help remove the outer layer of the skin. As such it is used to treat warts, skin tags, calluses, psoriasis, dandruff, acne, ringworm, and ichthyosis. For conditions other than warts, it is often used together with other medications. It is applied to the area affected treats acne by reducing swelling and redness and unplugging blocked skin pores to allow pimples to shrink.

“If salicylic acid is an ingredient in your serum, it is fine to use it every day.” However, if you are using an exfoliant that has salicylic acid in the formula, Dr. Hu advised only using the product three times per week to avoid over-exfoliating the skin and drying it out.
